And it's very suspicious that Levine lead them directly to this "puzzle". I think he works for Smile.
The only evidence against this that I can remember is how he reacted when the smile player got killed. He seemed to have been really shocked when he realized that there were contradictory rules that made winning by skill impossible. But maybe he isn't part of the Smile Foundation, but rather a "freelancer" that got a specific job?

An experimental batch, presumably, given that they consistently call this an experiment, and there's something unusual about this black crystal mine.
